The main religion in Thailand is Buddhism and 95% of Thai people are Buddhists. Buddhist philosophy has a strong connection with the environment because it looks at the basic human attitudes that are at the source of the well-publicised environmental issues currently faced by our planet and also highlights interaction and link between all processes and actions through the concept of ‘karma’.
With this in mind it is clear that by damaging the environment and our planet, we are in fact causing harm to ourselves. There are numerous well-publicised examples of this: acid rain, the greenhouse effect, the ozone hole, radioactive contamination, and many more. Buddhist philosophy states that every action has a reaction and the above reactions by nature to our careless mismanagement of the environment can damage us physically and psychologically.
Buddhist teachings state that in order to improve the quality of our lives we need to live in greater harmony with nature, refrain from careless use of natural resources and become more aware of the consequences of our actions.
